Valokuvataiteilija Ritva Kovalainen on 1990-luvun alusta lähtien työskennellyt monivuotisten taideprojektien parissa, joiden tuloksena on syntynyt useita laajoja museonäyttelyitä, kirjoja sekä myös elokuvia. Hänen työskentelyssään aiheeseen perehtyminen ja tiedon tuottaminen on yhdistynyt kirjoittamiseen ja valokuvaamiseen. Sisällöllisesti Kovalainen on keskittynyt kulttuurin ja luonnon rajapinnan tarkasteluun. Luonnon itseisarvo, pyrkimys luonnon kunnioittamiseen ja huoli ekologisen tasapainon horjumisesta ovat teemoja, jotka nousevat hänen töissään toistuvasti esiin.

Kovalainen on tehnyt myös pitkään yhteistyötä Sanni Sepon kanssa. Projekteissaan he ovat syventyneet mm. metsämytologiaan, metsätalouden maisemallisiin, sosiaalisiin ja ekologisiin vakutuksiin sekä luonnonmetsien erityispiirteisiin.

Töistään tunnustuksena Kovalainen on saanut mm. taiteilijaprofessorin arvon ja Suomi palkinnon. Kovalainen on tehnyt tilaustyönä teoksia myös julkisiin tiloihin.

Photography artist, Ritva Kovalainen,  has been working with long term art projects since the beginning of the 1990’s. From these projects she has made extensive museum exhibitions, books and films. In her work, information gathering is combined with writing and photography. The content of her work focuses in the boarder between nature and culture. The intrinsic value of nature,  our motivation to respect it,  and the fear of toppling ecological balance are recurring focal points in her creation.

Kovalainen has also worked extensively with Sanni Seppo. In their joint projects they have immersed themselves in forest mythology, forestry landscapes, social and ecological impacts on the forest and in the special characteristics of the natural forest.

Her work has earned her the honorary title of Professor of the Arts, and the Finnish State Award. Kovalainen has also been commissioned to make artwork for public places.
