KATI LEINONEN

Kati Leinonen
(b. 1974, Oulu)
Currently based: Oulu

Kati Leinonen on suomalainen valokuvataiteilija. Leinosen kuvien keskiössä on usein ihminen.

Kati Leinonen (b. 1974) is a Finnish photographer and artist currently living and working in Oulu, Northern Finland. She works with a variety of photographic techniques including video. Leinonen uses the 19th century wet plate collodion technique as a tool for portraiture. The slowness of this technique along with the cumbersome equipment required, create a photographing situation which is radically different from what we are used to in our digitalized era. It demands of the person photographed, to simply concentrate on being. As a result, learned mannerisms often fade away and the collodion image conjures a strong presence.
Leinonen has BA degree in photography from the London College of Printing and MA degree in audio-visual media culture from the University of Lapland, where she is currently working on her art-based doctoral thesis investigating the 19th century wet collodion process as a tool for contemporary portrait. Her works have been widely exhibited across Finland.
