Heijastusten käyttö historiallisten kuvien pinnoilla sumentaa usein hänen kuvansa miltei tunnistamattomiksi samalla korostaen vaikeutta pohtia historiaa objektiivisena totuutena. Jorma Puranen miltei ehdottaa fiktiivistä historiallista maailmaa.
Dialogue between past and present concerns lies at the very heart of Jorma Puranen´s work. Since the early 1990s he has used different techniques of re-photography, exploring and visualizing relations of history, knowledge, landscape and culture. His subject matter has ranged from illustrations of scholarly works and ethnographic photographs to historical portraiture and old glass negatives.
One of Jorma Puranen´s artistic practices is his use of quotation and metaphor. In many projects he combines three different interests so typical to his work: long term work in the North and the Arctic, the archive, and the use of reflecting light as a metaphor for speaking of history and memory. He uses reflections of daylight on surface of historical paintings or printed images blurring them sometimes completely unidentifiable and always difficult to look at. This blurring of images emphasizes the impossibility to consider history as objective truth, rather suggesting a fictive historical world. In Jorma Puranen’s work, the photograph becomes the site of the fluid renegotiation of the past. His photographs are both of the past and the present. In Roland Barthes’ terms, “there and then” becomes “here and now”.
Themes of disappearance and loss are characteristic to Jorma Puranen´s ouvre.
