JAAKKO HEIKKILÄ

Jaakko Heikkilä
(b. 1956, Kemi)
Currently based: Tornio

New Yorkin Harlemin vanha väestö, armenialaiset, Valkoisen meren rantojen pomorit, Serbian valakit, Havana Centron asukkaat Kuubassa, Suomen ja Venäjän karjalaiset, viimeisimpämä ”Veden kätkemiä huoneita” –näyttely Suomen Kansallismuseossa 2016 avaa ovia ikivanhaan eurooppalaiseen rikkauteen, Venetsian aatelistoon.

Usein hänen kuvissaan on mukana menneen maailman kaihoa. Samalla kuvat virittävät myös maailmassa olemisen ihmeen pohdiskeluun.

Jaakko Heikkilä on syntynyt 1956 Kemissä.

Venetsian Biennaalissa vuonna 2005.

Heikkilälle myönnettiin Barentsin Euroarktisen alueen kulttuuristibendi 2017. Valokuvataiteen Valtion palkinnon hän sai vuonna 2007 ja voitti Saksan Hanaussa kansainvälisen taidekilpailun ”Time and Nature” 2002. Lapin taidepalkinto hänelle myönnettiin vuonna 1993.

As a photographic artist, Jaakko Heikkilä is a conversationalist and a wanderer, a timeless drifter who likes meeting people and depicts them with empathy and warmth.

He started in the early 1990s as an interpreter of the unique culture of Tornionlaakso, the Northern borderlands of Finland and Sweden. Since then, the borderland nature of his home district has inspired numerous new photo projects around the world.

Almost by change, Heikkiläs themes have settled on minority peoples and populations, different communities, those who are outsiders in one way or another as well as those caught under the wheels of change: Old inhabitants of Harlem in NYC, Armenians, the Pomors of the shores of the White Sea, the Vlach people of Serbia, people of Havana Centro in Cuba, the Karelians of Finland and Russia. And the last one “Rooms Hidden by the Water” exhibition in Finnish National Museum opened doors to ancient European wealth, the Venetian nobility.

His photographs often contain nostalgia for a lost world as well as warm humour. At the same time, the photographs bring the viewer to ponder the miracle of being in the world.

Jaakko Heikkilä was born in Kemi in 1956. He graduated from the University of Oulu as a Master of Science in 1983 and worked as a researcher at the Academy of Finland until the end of 1989.

Heikkilä has been an independent photographic artist since 1990. He has had private and joint exhibitions in most European countries, the US and South America, including the Venice Biennale in 2005.

Heikkilä was granted the Cultural Scolarship of the Barents Euroarctic region 2017. He received the State Prize for Photographic Art in 2007 and first prize in the Time and Nature International Art Competition in Hanau, Germany in 2002. He was awarded the Lapland Art Prize in 1993.
