“Näen työni lankana, jonka perässä heiluvat kohtalon sakset. Langanpätkä on nyt 48 vuotta pitkä. Ei yhtään leikkattua kohtaa, ei vuottakaan puutu välistä. Silti vielä on kaksi vuotta matkaa, ei niinkään viisikymmenvuotiseen työuraan, vaan puolen vuosisadan työuraan. Se kuulostaa paremmalta. Laskea vuosikymmenissä. Puoli vuosisataa etsimessä, viisi vuosikymmentä linssin edessä.

Kuvittele hetken aikaa, että yksi vuosi olisi kulunut ilman minkäänlaista jälkeä – ei julkaisuja, ei kokoelmiin hankittuja töitä tai arkistoituja teoksia. Ei mitään säilyttämisen arvoista. Sanotaanko esimerkiksi vuodelta 1974, tai 1987 tai 2004. Kuin vuosi kalastusta ilman yhtäkään kalaa esiteltäväksi, oli syy sitten mitä tahansa; lapsen syntymä, uusi julkaisu, tragedia, tai herra parakoon, ajan piloille kuluttama filmi, jonka vasta löysit. Tai ehkä aloitit jotain vallan muuta, ja koulussasi vierailleen taiteilijan innoittamana tartuit siveltimeen kameran sijaan. Näissä hetkissä sakset olisivat saattaneet napsaista narun poikki, ja käynnistäneet laskurin taas alusta. Mitäs sitten, saatat tokaista muistuttaessasi, että valokuva ei ole urheilulaji – emme nosta kameraa saadaksemme pisteitä Guinnessin ennätyskirjaa varten. Vastaukseni on, että kun kerran ostat menolipun elämäsi loppuun saakka, et jää pois kyydistä kesken matkan. Sinun on jatkettava kalastusta. Olet koukussa!”

Arno Rafael Minkkinen on amerikansuomalainen valokuvaaja. Hän on osallistunut yli sataan yksityisnäyttelyyn ja yli kahteensataan ryhmänäyttelyyn galleriossa ja museoissa ympäri maailman. Hän toimii taiteen emeritus-professorina Massachusetsin yliopistossa Lowellissa ja dosenttina Helsingin Aalto-yliopistossa. Hänellä on mittava kansainvälinen ura niin opettajana, kirjoittajana kuin akateemikkona ja kuraattorina.

Suomalaista valokuvaa Minkkinen on edistänyt kuraattorin konsulttina 28 suomalaista valokuvaajaa esitelleessä Finnice, Nice-Audiovisuel’s -kiertonäyttelyssä Ranskan Rivieralla vuonna 1991.

Hänen töitään on yli 75 merkittävässä julkisessa taidekokoelmassa, muun muassa Pariisin Musée d’art modern ja Georges Pompidou Center, Lausannen Musée de l’Élysée, Helsingin Nykytaiteen museo Kiasma, New Yorkin Museum of Modern Art, Bostonin Museum of Fine Arts, Tusconin Center for Creative Photography, Houstonin Museum of Fine Arts, Andoverin Addison Gallery of American Art ja Tokion Metropolitan Museum of Photography.

Minkkistä edustaa 13 galleriaa eri puolilla maailmaa: New Yorkissa Edwynn Houk Gallery, Pariisissa Galerie Camera Obscura, Chigagossa Catherine Edelman Gallery, Torinossa Photo & Contemporary, Pekingissä SEE+ Gallery, sekä Oslossa Willas Contemporary. Lisäksi hänen töitään esitellään eri gallerioissa, esimerkiksi Bostonissa, Brysselissä, Kölnissä, Lissabonissa, Luxembourgissa ja Moskovassa.

Minkkiselle on myönnetty Suomessa valokuvataiteen valtionpalkinto vuonna 2006. Lisäksi hänet on palkittu muun muassa Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Fine Art vuonna 2013 ja John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship vuonna 2015.

”I see my work as a piece of string haunted by but one existential nemesis: a pair of scissors. The string is now 48 years long. No scissor cuts, not a year missing. But I still have two years to go before reaching not 50 years of work but half a century of work. It sounds better that way to my camera, counting in decades. Half a century out of the viewfinder, five decades in front of the lens.

In any case, imagine for a moment that one year had passed with nothing to show for it—meaning nothing published, collected, or preserved in the archives, nothing really worth keeping—let’s say from the year 1974, or 1987, or 2004—a year of fishing with no fish to show for it, for whatever good reason: the birth of a child, a new book, a tragedy, god forbid, or a bucket full of now fogged film you only found yesterday. Or you started something completely different while still in graduate school, heeding the advice of a visiting artist who told you to pick up a paintbrush instead. That’s when the scissors could have come out, starting the countdown clock all over again. Big deal, you say, reminding me that photography isn’t a sport; we don’t pick the camera to score points on the Guinness Book of World Records. My response: Guinness is for Black & Tans with Bass Ale preferred in homage to Édouard Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergère. You get my point. Once you buy that nonstop, one-way ticket to the end of your life, you don’t get off the train. You gotta keep catching the fish. You’re hooked!”

Arno Rafael Minkkinen is a Finnish American photographer, with over 100 solo shows and 200 group exhibitions at galleries and museums worldwide. Emeritus Professor of Art at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and docent at the University of Art & Design Helsinki, his teaching, writing, and academic/curatorial career has been extensive and international in scope.

In service to Finnish Photography, Minkkinen was deputy consultant to the curator of Finnice, Nice-Audiovisuel’s exhibition of 28 Finnish photographers throughout the French Riviera in 1991.

Minkkinen’s works are held in over 75 prominent museum and institutional collections worldwide, such as the Musée d’art moderne and the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, the Musée de l’Élysée in Lausanne, the Contemporary Art Museum Kiasma in Helsinki, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Thirteen galleries represent his work: Edwynn Houk Gallery in New York, Galerie Camera Obscura in Paris, Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago, Photo & Contemporary in Torino, SEE+ Gallery in Beijing, and Willas Contemporary in Oslo. Additional representations include galleries in Boston, Bruxelles, Köln, Lisbon, Luxembourg, and Moscow.

Minkkinen is a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts regional grant in 1991, the Order of the Lion First Class from the Finnish Government in 1993, the 2006 Finnish State Art Prize in Photography, the 2013 Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Fine Art, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in 2015.
